3 Factors To Consider When Purchasing A Shell For Your Truck

Posted on

If you want to add a shell to your truck, here are three factors you should consider while going through the purchasing process.

New Versus Used

The first decision you will need to make is if you want to purchase a new cover or a used cover.

The advantage of purchasing a used cover is generally you will significantly reduce the cost of the cover. However, the downside to purchasing a used cover is that you will generally have to purchase it yourself. Additionally, there is a good chance that the shell you purchase may not have been designed to specifically fit your vehicle. Your best bet at getting a shell that fits well is to purchase the shell from someone who drives the same make and model as you, and whom is the original owner of the shell.

The biggest advantage of purchasing a new shell is that you can ensure the shell you purchase is designed to specifically fit snugly on your vehicle. Additionally, the shell should also come with a warranty when you purchase it new. However, you will probably have to pay a lot more for a new shell than you would a used one.

Color

The next thing you need to take into consideration is the style of the shell.

At the most basic end, you can purchase a shell that is painted a simple, single color. This color may match your truck, or it may complement it. One of the most common colors for simple, basic shells is black.

As you go up the price range, you can purchase a shell that was designed to match the specific paint color on your vehicle. You can even purchase a shell, for a little more money, that incorporates design elements into it, such as colored lines on the side, for a little more money.

If you are willing to invest the money, you can get a shell that matches and complements your truck.

Style

Finally, you need to think about what type of style elements you want your shell to have.

The first style element is if you want a solid shell, or a shell that has windows on the side of it. If you plan on sleeping or camping in the back of your truck, or transporting your pets in the back of your truck, you may want to invest in a shell that has windows that open on the side of it. If you don't plan on using your truck that way, then a solid shell will work just fine.

The second style element you need to consider is what type of door you want the back of your shell to have. You can purchase a shell that is open above your truck bed door or you can purchase one that has a door. If you want a closing door, you can choose one that is solid or has a window. From there, you can choose between a door that slides up into the top of the shell, or one that opens outward.

The third style element you need to consider is how you want the inside of your shell to look. You can have the fiberglass exposed on the inside of the shell. Or, you can have the inner shell lined with indoor/outdoor grade carpet, which will increase the insulation levels of your shell.

Finally, you need to decide if you want to have a rack added to the top of your shell. This can be nice if you know you will need additional storage for your gear.

Before you start shopping around for a camper shell, make sure you know what style elements you are looking for, how important it is that your shell match your truck, and how much you are willing to spend.
